The C900 board can give a lot of help if you define your problems ie is this just a clutch that's going or more? These trannys were never strong and if it has had abuse lately that might not be good. How is the rest of it: engine, headliner, dash?
Having had an '83 about 25 years I can tell what you already suspect - if you let it go and treat it badly it can take some work to put it in good shape again. That might not be a good investment if the driver is not the sort to take care of it.
