Re: ... LED hyperflash - Saabnet.com Bulletin Board
Interesting solution. hyperflash results from the absence of current flowing, and an LED uses what, an eighth of the current as an incandescent (halogen or nitrogen) of equivalent light output? So run the missing current to a second load, a resistor. Moving the heat from the bulb (which does a number on the light socket) to a resistor doesn't mean less heat, just heat in a hopefully less damaging place. But considering, the H21 halogen bulb dissipates, er, 21 watts. Taking some liberty by considering the duty cycle (call it 50%, or 10 watts), and guessing that the current threshold is something like half way between a fully functioning bulb (2 amps) and a burned out one (0), you'd need at least a 5 watt resistor. And be certain there's nothing combustible in the immediate vicinity of the resistor.
