Lambda probe

Hi Folks, Following a "check engine" warning diagnosed as lambda sensor, I replaced teh item with a universal zircon probe. The original was sooted up. HOwever, the check engine light is still givieng 6 flashes, suggesting that the change has not solved the problem. I guess that the soot on teh original probe indicates that the engine is running a little rich. Any suggestions for help on this?
