I was totally enthralled with the A4 line-up and getting close to making the purchase when just for kicks I happened into a Saab dealership. I had had a 900T in the early 80's and have since had mostly Volvo's (245,745,855) The latest Volvo line-up pissed me off for not having a 5 spd. and being very expensive, so the A4 seemed like the ticket. I wanted to spend around 30k, so that meant the 1.8T w/ sport pkge. No leather, no V6, no fancy stereo....I ended up with the Viggen after 2 days of thought (compared to mulling the A4 purchase for months) One test drive did it for me. I put about 40k miles on in a year and those seats are in a league of their own. Other key factors were roominess, great gas mileage 30mpg highway, uniqueness (only 400/yr in the US)And as an engineer, I take things like safety factors into consideration..not road safety but mechanical design safety factors. For example, the Viggen drivetrain is beefed up to hold up to 256 ft-lbs of torque, the A4 is based on a piddly 150 (or maybe 170 in the 2001) hp drivetrain. Considering I'll drive either car in about the same manner (hard to teach an old dog new tricks) I wanted the one with the beefier drivetrain. Plus I knew I'd end up chipping the 1.8T if I got it. The only compromise in the Viggen is snow performance. You're locked in to 16" tread for snows, nowhere near as good as 15 inchers on 4wd. But I managed fine last winter here in northern New England in spite of that.
The other clincher was the 31K price and the 820 bucks extra for 4 beutiful alloys mounted with good snows. No regrets. Would I rather have had an S4, probably, but not for 9k more. The other thing I would recommend is pricing the 9-5 Aero. I have no idea if it is close to the discounted Viggens but if so, I like the looks, and though I think the Viggen looks better as a coupe, I do miss my 4 doors.

Let us know what you end up with.
