Actually, I have both the 2000 5-dr viggen and a '99 A4 1.8T (w/ sport package). I really like the Saab better. It's much roomier, which comes in handy lugging around those kids.
I just got the Saab a couple of weeks ago. The steering is "heavier" than the A4 (which I think is a good thing). The torque steer gets to be interesting when giving it the go pedal since most the roads I'm on are grooved. It's only pronounced when at low speed and really bad at the shift between 1st & 2nd. The A4 is similar, but not as strong. Also, it's not really torque steer since it will pull left and right as it tries to climb out of the groove. Generally, I really have the impression that the Saab is a much stouter car than the A4.
I also agree that the BMW, while nice, isn't worth the ticket price. I drove the Lexus IS, the new Mercedes C-class, Chrysler 300m, Bmw 330i, Audi S4, and the Audi A6 while shopping for the new car. I choose the Saab over them all...
