Well I must disagree on one point and that is safety. IIHS is beginning to be a joke because the real world numbers are not matching up with the predicted safety. The FARS data from 1998 and 1999 show only two SAAB deaths for those two model years. Volvo, which sold three times as many cars for those two model years in 98 and 99 had 48 deaths. BMW had nearly 60. You can't tell me that BMW sold 30 times as many cars in the US in 98 and 99 as SAAB. SAAB sold 70,000 which means BMW would have had to sell 3,000,000. I understand BMW makes about 750,000 cars a year. How many come to the US I don't know.
Rear wheel drive does not rule when it comes to safety. In the Folksam data of a couple of years ago, all five cars in the golden group were front wheel drive. In the Folksam study, the 3 series was only 20% safer than average a few years ago. Both the 900 and 9000 made the golden group which were 50% or more safer than average.
I stay away from rear drivers even though I know the automotive press is infatuated with them. The automotive press only gives lip service to safety most of the time. Be careful in that BMW when you get it and don't be over confident with those IIHS ratings. The Australian NCAP advises to base a car's expected safety on a car's real world stats first, then crash tests second.
