The sliding mechanism is notch and groove and it is just plastic on plastic. I was worried about it sliding loose also, but that has not been the case. In fact, it is "tight" enough that I can't just put my elbow on the leather pad and slide it forward by pressure. I have to actually grab the pad by spreading my thumb and index finger and pull it forward. It does not take a lot of "pull", but it is definitely not loose.
Will it get more loose over time with wear? I'm not sure but I kind of doubt it. The plastic is not hard and slick to encourage sliding. I have had mine for two months now and it seems to slide about the same in all degrees of cold weather (down to 10F here) and normal heated passenger compartment temperatures. It will be interestin to see if the hot summer weather has any effect on it or not, but so far, I am happy with it.
