When my daughter bought her used '95 900S a few years ago - with 80K miles on it - I bought a replacement brush/regulator set for the alternator.
Don't ask me why I did this - I have has 10 - 12 Saabs over the past 15 years and have never had to replace this item. But, what the hell, its the daughter's car and we don;t want anything to happen to her.
Anyway, It's been 5 years and that regulator is still sitting in the glove box. Never had the inclination to change it out and (more importantly) never had a reason to do so. The car now as 120K miles on it and the alternator is still going strong.
My suggestion, when the brushes go then replace the regulator. You will have other pre-emptive work that should be done on a car with that many miles. Start with flushing all of the fluids - brake, PS, Cooling and Tranny (if automatic). If you have a DIC - my daughter's didn't - consider buying a spare. Other than that look forward to another 100K miles of fun - and entertaining dialog on this BB.
