Got the same car with the same engine with the same problem. You are probably talking about the SAI system. SAI stands for supplemental (or secondary) air injection. The hoses are connected to the silver tubing that is hooked-up to the exhaust manifold - Right? The black metal cylinder between the rubber hose and the silver tubing is a check valve, which has probably gone bad. This allows the very hot exhaust gasses to back up into the system and melts the plastic.
I removed the entire system and used 12 x 1.5 mm bolts to plug up the holes in the xhaust manifold. Car runs great - no Check Engine light , no smell of anything. Worked for me!
