Dave:
That is exactly what I did with my daughter's '95 S. After taking the console out and figuring out the color coding of the electrical leads off the ignition switch, I stripped the insulation off both "Hot" leads for about 1/8" ( enough to get a alligator clip on them) and reconnected the switch. I then ran the car like this for about a week, which would have been sufficient time to have the car cut-out atleast a dozen times. There was not a single event. I then bought the new ignition switch, installed it and put the console back together. That was 4 years and 30,000 miles ago and there hasn;t been one reoccurrence of the cut-out problem.
That said, I have to agree with Dean that there is alot of potential for short circuit problems doing what I did. While I think that all of the leads to the igition switch were protected by a fuse somewhere up the line ,I wasn;t sure. So, I paid particular attention to insulating all of the wires including my jumper.
Considering that the dealer and indy's told my daughter that either they didn't have a clue or the car needed a new computer ($3,000 +), the effort was well worth it.
Good luck
