I had the same problem on my duaghter's '95 S. The air pump squeeked like heck. When I bought the car from her a few onths ago, the first thing that I did was to remove - in its entirety - the SAI. That includes Pump, bypass valve, solinoid val;ves, manifold, hoses, etc. The car is much much quieter now - both at start-up and while running (evidently the check valve at the exhaust manifold) creates a lot of noise).
I don't know what my state will do come emission testing time. Given that it is not OBD-II, they will put it on a dynomometer and check the emissions. In the past, they never opened the hood. So, time will tell. In the mean time, you can;t beleive how quiet the engine is!
