a/c issues

I have a 1999 9-3 base model, and whenever I turn on my a/c I feel a great loss of power, I've never experienced such a power loss in any other vehicle, and while on the highway the car has a slight jerking effect that can be felt in the steering wheel, then when I turn off the a/c it goes away. I was wondering if I'm the only one that's having this problem, or are they all like this??
