I picked up a super clean '02 Vig 4-door for super cheap with the usual failed 235 motor. Put in a 234 bottom end from a 96 Aero with the necessary changes to make it work in the car. She has 180K and I run the "MTF63" oil now but the trans is at the age where I am beginning to worry about repairs (crush sleeves, etc.) Since the model 401 was specific to that car, any suggestions if/when I have problems? I am guessing with some work I could use a standard 9-3 405/407 trans with output shaft changes or are the guts of that 401 trans larger to take the higher horsepower? It drives well now, but 2nd gear is going to give up at some point by the feel of it.
I plan to drive the car as long as she will go so just looking around for advice. I have found a complete '01 Vig at a salvage yard with 58K on it (hit front left corner just enough to total it out). Not sure how much that trans is worth, but maybe worth the gamble to buy it as they are hard to find. What would you pay for one of these transmissions used? I have done transmission work, but have never been inside one of these before. Thanks for the time. I need to think of what else to steal off this salvage car!!!
