Ignition relay: not for ignition, so what does it do?

I just converted my 1997 900 lemons race car to a push button start today. It was completely painless but I have a mystery.
The gray and brown wire that connects to the "Ignition switch relay" doesn't prevent the car from powering up or starting. Red and brown brings power on, black and white engages the starter. Connect all three at once and it dies so completely that you have to pull the battery for a little bit to unwedge it. Under normal conditions with stock ignition, here's what the tumbler does for sure:
key b/r b/g b/w
off off off off
run on on off
start on off on
Our push button isn't complex enough to emulate that behavior, but at this point it doesn't look like we have to, which is weird. The car starts, runs, and drives great. Brake lights work and all that. My only guess is that this relay is misleadingly named. Every street Saab I've ever had normally switches off the headlights and radio and a bunch of other stuff when the starter is running, and then as soon as you release the key back to the run position those things come back.
If I touch the gray/brown wire to battery positive while the car is running, I can hear the relay click but it doesn't appear to have any effect on anything. So, what did it ever control? I want to be sure of what I'm doing before ripping out this wire.
