CEL + CGBL + Milky Transmission Fluid
Posted by SeanW (more from SeanW) on Wed, 4 Apr 2012 06:24:31

This is kind of long, sorry about that, but I have a weird batch of symptoms. If any of you can help point me in the right direction, I would appreciate it.

I have a 1999 9-3S, automatic with 145K on it. A couple of weeks ago I started getting a check coolant warning appearing at random times. Each time I checked the coolant reservoir it seemed to be full. I figured it was a failing sensor. Flash forward to last night: I pulled out of my place and suddenly got a check engine light, check gear box light, and the coolant warning all at once. The car didn't shut down or go into limp mode (I never went over 35 mph, but it shifted fine from first to second and back), and I came straight back to my place. There was coolant leaking all over the place.

When I looked at it in the light this morning, I clearly have a hole in the lower radiator hose. That is easy enough to fix. What has me worried though is the check gear box light. I took a look at the tranny fluid, and there is plenty in there, but it looks a little milky. That makes me worry--that stuff isn't milky straight out of the bottle.

Any thoughts on what I should do after I get the new radiator hose in this afternoon? I'm thinking that a tranny fluid flush is in order given the cloudy fluid, but I don't know about where to go from there. I am worried that somehow my transmission fluid and coolant are mixing within the radiator / tranny cooler set up, but a busted hose shouldn't have caused that.

If y'all have some advice, I would love to hear it. Any thoughts on how to tell if I am in full radiator failure mode? And if so, where do I go from there? Thanks guys.
