Parking on a steep hill

Just moved to a new apartment and the road that I park on is very steep. I look at the car and wait for it to start rolling. Tried to back up about four feet and smelled the worst clutch smell I have ever smelled. Its a steep hill.
Its a 9-3 with 5spd
At night I have been parking with the emergency brake up and then hitting the clutch and letting off the brake to let the emergency brake hold up the car, not the transmission. I also cut the wheels really hard in case something goes really wrong in the night.
Other than never backing up the hill again, is there anything I can do to help out the car? Should the front be pointing down the hill, up the hill? Should I let the transmission hold up the car instead of the parking brake? Any thoughts, ideas, or experiences would be welcomed.
Thanks
ST
