Have always used K&N w/o problems

But my goals/expectations are different from yours.

I use K&N for their economy, not their performance. I've had the same K&N on my 1990 C900 (w/MAF) for about 10 yrs (130,000 miles?). I think I've cleaned it 3 times so far. I also used a K&N in my '99 9-3 (no MAF) for 8 yrs/100k mi & cleaned it twice. Our '02 9-3 (w/MAF) has had one for the past 4 yrs/60k mi & I'll clean it for the first time later this summer.

For me, that's a LOT of saved time & expense in replacing paper air filters!!

Keep in mind that K&Ns have a limited number of cleanings (& years) in their life. I think it's 10 yrs and/or 25 cleanings. So if you drive 15k mi/yr & clean your K&N every 3k mi, its life is "over" after 5 yrs/75k mi because you've cleaned it 25 times. And every time you clean & re-oil it, you have the potential for over-oiling. So even a little over-oiling has the opportunity to add up to a lot of potential MAF hassle in a short time.

If you're worried about MAF fouling, you can always pull it out & give the sensor wire a gentle spray of either carb or brake cleaner. I've done that once to my '90 C900, just 'cuz. And I might do it to the '02's MAF when I re-oil the K&N.
