I am sure this comment was half in jest. A car manufacturer WARRANTS their car on that juice(oil) right??. The auto manufacturers spec out what their needs are on a RFP, Right ????
Then, Mobil, Castrol, Pennzoil, Valvoline, etc., submit their respective bids and submit to testing.
I am convinced if engines went up in smoke, the mfr would make Mobil 1 eat the costs in the example you write.
Sidebar: As Saturn made Texaco eat all the costs of wrongly formulated antifreeze in their early Saturns. Circa 1991.
Not to deny at all, th PR opportunity that exists--but Mobil has to obtain permission to use the name of that mfr. on its packaging, etc.
Saab puts synthetic oil into its manual gearboxes from mid 1997 on. Do you mean to imply Saab got it for free ?? Ludicrous. After multiple failures on the dino stuff, they(SAAB) simply discovered it was better. They do not even post a change interval on the gearboxes delivered w/synthetic.
Fast Forward: SAAB WARRANTS that if I change my oil and filter every 10,000 miles,(SABB Models and years vary slightly here) and utilize a ANY 10W-30 oil HAVING THE STARBURST ON THE LABEL, my engine will be repaired/replaced for up to 4 years/50,000 miles. I NEVER had a problem, and ask you to show me an engine that did---its like you with your boost controller---show me the blown up motor.
I use Mobil 1 10W-30 today in all my Saabs. I believe that I could EASILY go 10,000 miles between changes. Worst case would be to change the filter at 5,000 miles and oil and filter at 10,000 miles usung Mobil 1 10W-30.
I do not live in climate extreme enough to justify the other available weights, but I am sure some of our readers do.
I am satisfied that Mobil one could provide protection PAST the 10,000 miles---but since I am bound by warranty requirements---I will abide by them.
Through oil analysis, and on the engine presently I have, I believe that 20,000 miles between changes would not be out of the question. I have done oil analysis in the past--- back in the mid 80's, and really forgot about it until Dick in Falls Church posted it. Maybe after the end of the Saab warranty I'll do it again. I am sure Dick has similar statistical data to back this up.
The oil will not look the nice amber tone like it does when you change it every 3,000 miles.
I do not work for or with EXXON/MOBIL either. I am certain however of my personal experiences, and offer those experiences to the BB readers.
Regards.
