Ron I've never subscribed to the thinking that "the car is only worth X amount"! Once you do that, IMO, it's worth nothing. It becomes to easy to justify buying aftermarket cheap parts, using crappy tires, etc. on the other hand, I treat my Viggen as if it were a new car and if things aren't up to standard or I think are coming up for replacement...I replace them...with new OEM parts or better. It's a Viggen after all!! I know it doesn't make economic sense but my Viggen drives like new (I completely rebuilt the front suspension a couple of years ago).
As for cutting the hole, I'd rather not. Why? Well there is keeping the car original, then there's my uncertainty of how the car might perform in a collision (surely SAAB had their reasons for offsetting this hole?), then there's the job of sealing it up and not to mention cutting and grinding in the vicinity of gasoline makes me uncomfortable.
Thanks for the tips. I do have new straps so that's not an issue, in fact I'd prefer to replace them of there's any chance that they are rusty (memories of Ford Pintos come to mind).
