I just yesterday picked up an '02 9-3 'vert for my daughter. On the ride home, got this code for Incorrect Gear Ratio along with the gearbox warning light. No speed sensor error code. It happened right after a pit stop on the 120 mile road trip home.

Just heard back from the PO. They had replaced one of the two input/output shaft speed sensors, as well as the neutral safety switch. I too noticed the necessary wiggle in the shifter to get the dash gear indicator to show properly.

Based on my research, I was already thinking it's the NSS, aka range switch. Or possibly a speed sensor. Now that I know those were replaced in the past year or two, I think my NSS may just need to be adjusted, and possibly the shifter linkage too, so that shifting is more definitive. With your car not wanting to turn over without a gearshift wiggle, it's highly likely that it's your NSS.

There is a tutorial on disassembling and cleaning it, which is successful for some, not long-lasting for others. http://www.saabcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=183811 Nice photo gallery of the process at https://picasaweb.google.com/111335022407287786454/Jul22011Saab95NeutralSafetySwitchRemoveRepair?authkey=Gv1sRgCIvkyIvagPKzEA# Cheapest source for a replacement part is RockAuto.com https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=3778752&cc=1434333&jsn=524 Still close to $300, so you may want to try the cleaning first.

And I guess my car is in limp home mode, as it was requiring 3K RPM to get moving from a stop (3rd gear start) after this. And my daughter commented on the gas pedal being stiff. I won't be home to fiddle with it until Monday.
