dear nick, thanks for your feed back ! (Nick)- Never sold many as spare parts. Obviously Saab didn't sell enough of them to be an important part.
(Neil) A) I think they didn't sell very many as it's not a wear part. Only about now -(15 years old) is mine degrading, breaking down. funny thing it;s not important until you think you need it (or you really need it)! Here's a scenario: we had a serious underhood fire in my wife's 99'9-3 SE cv ( fan resistor shorted out -made plastic fan shroud burn ) it raged until it melted a hole in the top radiator hose which put out the fire! WHOOOOOSH ! just as the fire dept arrived! one of the firemen joked "the SAAB has a built in fire suppression system! it's a really safe car! " HA HA !! (paint on the hood was fine ) hood insulator sacrificed itself!
The hard part will be shipping them. Since they had to be shipped flat. That meant truck freight, more than the part cost. That killed most of the sales. So trying to run a batch of them and distribute from your garage will be tough.
A) YES my idea is to design the insulation so it can be rolled up, I've suggested to several companies that the design be modified , fabricate the replacement insulation w/ pockets- could be put on the back and wouldn't show ( ever seen the pockets sewed in yacht sails where you slide in stiffening materials,?)thin strips of fiberglass -carbon fiber now maybe? battens i think they're called ? these keep the shape of the sail better, hence more efficient I had a small racing dingy that had them -grew up on a lake in Michigan
There are plenty of companies that make them for the street rod market. Maybe can get something.. Although way cheaper to cut one yourself from bulk material.
A) Yes, would need a newish one to use as a pattern - or 3d scan the hood underside and transfer to cam-cad. Seen those re-bath outfits and countertop replacers that use a laser scanner and come back w/ a perfect fit cut in their shop ready, to install?
I haven't run one in my car for a long time. Never liked how they sagged onto the oil caps and engine cover. Even couple years old. A) yes I imagine that's right! mine sags worse now than before. and I hate how it rubs on things as the motor oscillates on its mounts, good reason to have your stiffer engine, tranny mounts! we think it might be important to keep the heat fr damaging the paint on the hood? maybe it 's not so hot there in Missouri? here it would be getting cooked on both sides! sun and engine! I helped the local SAAB god install one some years ago - I think he used that 3-m "BLACK death -or YELLOW death" weatherstrip adhesive (or a contact cement on both sides) in addition to the stock fasteners.
