Yea that's what they thought. (that wrapping would cause cracking ) I don't think it's true. I have wrapped turbos and exhausts on cars and motorcycles for years w/ no apparent ill effects!( another rumor was it "would cause pipes to corrode" --uh, it DIDN'T) Recently the price of the turbo covers, ready-made as opposed to make it yourself have become cheap ( the manufacturers in china have discovered they can sell them directly themselves on e-bay etc as opposed to marketing thru an American co. ) and at a fraction of the marked up price! the theory is that by not allowing the heat energy to be "convected " wasted outward you will preserve more heat energy that will be used to spin the turbo faster =more exhaust gas energy =.(Hence, more HP- tho the gains would be minimal ) Yamaha said it was a 1-2 % gain Wrapping will make the components actually MORE thermally stable( hell they're going to get hotter than crap anyway eh ?) and therefore LESS prone to fracture. shock cooling is a serious issue in aircraft engines. we only wrap, cover the hot side. It makes a substantial difference in underhood temperatures(s)and helps all the plastic parts last longer ( an issue as SAAB parts become more scarce. Heat soak is brutal in the desert- ambient temperatures are already frequently over 100 deg F HEAT is the ENEMY! PS the proprietary process "jet hot " coating works well too (done inside and outside a pipe or manifold ) but woah howdy! it's NOT cheap! PSS all the hoses , wires I had covered w/ the heat-proofing materials fr DEI inc & Thermotec were unharmed when the rad fan resistor shorted out and we had a underhood fire in my wife's 99'9-3 se cv (melted half the battery ! ) top rad hose finally melted (wasn't covered ) and put out the fire just as fire dept arrived =the saab fire suppression system ! regards, Neil
