I'm thinking about doing a total restore on my 1st arrival 99 Viggen (I'm the original owner). been driving Saab since the early 80s and was ready to buy a new 9-5 right before the factory closed so this is the last Saab for me. I thought about getting one of the "brand new" ones that's been sitting in a lot for years but decided that it maybe a better idea to do a total restore on the Viggen.
The car only have 100K on it and the engine was rebuilt by the dealer at 40K (it blew right before warranty expires) so it's more like 60K since the rebuilt. Have install new shocks and brakes. It's only been driven once or twice a month in the last 10 years. Will probably replace all the bushing, hoses and belt. Wonder if I need a new timing belt?
Body need some work as the front spoiler has been worn through on the bottom edge in a few places. It was also in a minor rear end accident so the rear needs some body work. I have access to all new factory bodykit parts so that should not be a problem. It will need a new paint job as the original Lightning Blue have worn away in a few places on the roof.
The interior is in pretty good shape, I'll probably need to re-upholstery part of the driver seat as the leather on outside lumbar support have worn through. I'll also need a new SID as the LCD segments are not all working. Might want to install a more updated Stereo units while I'm at it.
The total cost is probably going to be more than the car is worth. But I want to keep one last Saab. I probably won't have to pay the full cost as I maybe able to barter the paint and bodywork with the Bodyshop next to my office as they want access to some parking space on my lot for storing cars.
Have anyone gone through a full restore process, I would welcome any advise on what else to check and anything to watch out for. TIA
