Well if you wrap the exhaust pipe, cat and system you can actually touch it! (albeit briefly ) and not get burned and we've used it (thermotec, design engineering inc materials, products ) for 30 years ! (and by the by, you can get cheaper chi-com/Taiwanese knock offs of the materials on eBay or alibaba.com now ) the Thermotec material I don't know I'd put it on the pan itself? Why not block the source of heat? (the exhaust ) Wrap that pipe! Yamaha used it on their race bikes and also found a slight 1-2% power increase the heat energy is not wasted ! this would also be notably, particularly efficacious in our recherche Saab turbo application! For a myriad of dielectric reasons! When I see a photo of red hot pipes, or hot side turbo I just think about the wasted, attenuated heat energy being pissed away (ok dissipated, convected)! I imagine the engine underhood components, hoses, wires, plastic who are screaming silently in unheard agony, anguish in the dolor, throes of inescapable caloric torture !demoniacally being savagely cooked, broiled, roasted mercilessly! The precious, inestimable expensive Saab parts whose service life are severely compromised, shortened by the catastrophic destructive , brutal, sadistic, pernicious ,ruinous ,lethiferous ,noxious, evil heat that can be correctly, controlled, corralled, contained by proper application /use of turbo blanket covers/exhaust wrap, other materials . as the saying goes "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound (or many $$$ !) of cure "
