There's also US-DOT regulations about the configuration of lights. I heard something about a limit to the number of white front-facing lights, essentially outlawing certain configurations of lights. Maybe the rule was there, but the interpretation changed at some point in time.
Our C900 had those lights as well as rear-facing white lights in the front corners, which came on with the back-up lights. Those were pretty nice too because they illuminated alongside the car while you were backing up.
