Manual Transmission- Replace or Rebuild Posted by Johnhcarter [Email] (#471) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Johnhcarter) on Fri, 17 Nov 2017 13:36:54 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I finally got a, new to me, (not running when I got it) 01 93 HOT hatchback together after an engine rebuild and a paint job. Thought the manual trans would likely be good at only 121,000 miles. Doesn’t sound so good. In neutral at idle the trans makes a little noise. Kind of sounds like the main shaft is running dry. First is a little noisy. Second somewhat noisy. Third on up sounds normal. Syscronizers seem ok.
Possibly the previous owner let the trans oil get low.
Question is should I consider a salvage yard replacement or should I try to rebuild?
Trans seemed to have a good amount of oil in it but I did not measure what came out. Lots of metal sludge on the magnet but that is normal at 100,000 plus miles if oil never changed. I put in new seals, throw out bearing and oil.
