CLUTCH THROW-OUT BEARING rattle?

Hi!
I'm looking at purchasing a Viggen to join my 9-5 Aero. Seller indicates he hears the "throw-out bearing clanging sometimes when the car is in neutral and the clutch is out, idling. It rattles, but with a rev will go away, and it goes silent when the clutch is engaged."
I'm no specialist, but casual research online got me concerned a failure could lead to the totaling of the transmission (worst case). Is this correct?
Would you pass on the car on this basis? Price is already a little steep. Would you drive it as is? Would you get it fixed?
Any ideas on what a fix would entail, is it essentially like doing a clutch job (with so much labor that one might as well do the clutch while at it)?
THANKS, ALL, this is a tremendous resource!
Rick
