FWIW, I had a similar conversation with my upholsterer a couple years ago. I commented that the leather in my '67 Cadillac still looked very good, but that GM had forgotten how to make durable leather seats. He said the same thing - he didn't use the word paint, but "color treatment" but with the same net effect... it dries out and fails. His example was the general patina on the Fleetwood showing its age, something new leather seats won't ever do. They will tend to look as new until they catastrophically fail.
