Well, the answer is the 9-3 part number and the 9-5 part number are mated to their corresponding torque converters. The bolt holes and spacing are different - it'd be impossible to put a 9-3 flex plate on a 9-5 converter, or vice versa. Perhaps the '03 convertible was a parts bin build using 9-6 parts, or perhaps it had a surgery at some point...
