I can't speak for the manual, but on the autoboxes the end cover is just sealed on - two flanges mated with some type of red sealant. So, removal and reinstallation is - in theory - just some thorough cleaning and new goop.
The ATSG manual says:
Remove 9 bolts
Tap the rear cover off
I'm not positive, but I believe there are four O-rings that need to be replaced on reassembly - three on a bearing race (for the C1-C2 drum?) and one on the C1 accumulator. It's a bit difficult for me to follow the instructions without something to look at. But, I have doubts I can get those O-rings and I'm not sure they'd survive disassembly and reassembly, hence the external RTV.
it's totally possible the leak is a tiny pinhole failure in the sealant and 2 linear feet of RTV :) is sufficient. Also possible one of the several bolts that I was able to easily tighten did the trick. I just hate not knowing.
