Removing OnStar

2001 9-3 5 door. I'm getting around to removing the OnStar system. The Technical Service Bulletin says to open up the center console and disconnect a wire from the SRS module and remove the wire from pin 39 in the connector. Then remove the units from the trunk.
Is disconnecting the wires in the center console actually necessary? I've read that some folks just remove the modules from the trunk area.
