Changed rear muffler --three concerns Posted by bender [Email] (#268) [Profile/Gallery] (more from bender) on Sat, 11 Aug 2018 10:23:56 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
2000 9-3 SE with 175k, original rear muffler. I got a new one from eeruo by Starla and I was told the "Genuine Saab" one would be a Starla in a Saab box. I don't know about that...but I went with it anyway.
Installed it and now I see that there's BARELY a finger's width between the muffler and the left rear spring. The old original part had a curve on the muffler, obviously to accommodate the spring. There's very tight clearance now. Will this be okay?!
The other concern is that, the noise is still there! There was definitely a leak with the rear muffler, but before I changed it, I noticed that this exhaust-like sound is *independent* of the engine speed and *dependent* on the speed of the car. So if I'm coasting at 100km/h in neutral, the sound (that sounds like an exhaust going bad) is there. What could this possibly be?
Lastly, I didn't find any torque settings for the clamp. I went by feel and tightened both sides as evenly as I could and it's nice and tight but not overly tight.
Before joining the ends, I cleaned the surfaces with some sandpaper and used some putty-like exhaust stuff to seal. A very very thin coat. I read here it's better to use something flexible. Hopefully it's just enough to make a good seal. Now I have a full tube...great!
Thanks for your tips, as always.
