I didn't feel right offering a solution without testing it. At first, it wasn't easy. I tried a couple of filed and bent contraptions before I found a piece of 3/16" x 36" round bar from H Depot. And the only mod was to put a 1" bend on the end. First time took me about 10 minutes but the second time, less than a minute. I marked it so I could tell the position of the hook and how far in it was. The best angle of attack seems to be as pictured, for the leverage and to avoid obstacles. Maybe I got lucky but at least now I know it's possible. With the number of times I pop the hoods on our cars, I'll probably need it one day.
