Manufacturer's filter chioce is for their benefit Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Mon, 28 Jan 2019 16:08:17 In Reply to: Benefit of an oversize oil filter?, Samuel, Sat, 26 Jan 2019 11:05:01 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Sometimes a smaller filter is used to allow easier shipping of the engine (smaller shipping rack) or assembly of the car (less interference with other components). In these cases the Service Instructions in the Owner's Manual require a larger filter to be used after 'break-in'.
You can pretty much be assured the factory oil filter is the lowest cost filter that will do an adequate job at removing engine damaging dirt, at the manufacturer's specified oil change intervals, for the manufacturer's pre-determined normal life expectancy of the vehicle. And since the Manufacturers want to sell more vehicles, their assumed life expectancy may be less than yours.
I know, very cynical attitude, but this is the result of 38 years in the Auto Industry with a few insights.
If you can't tell, I always use a larger than factory filter on my B235 engines. I opt for a one size larger oil filter which is 'standard size' in my mind, rather than the factory 'diminutive size' filters. Obviously this can't be done with my '06 9-3 so I buy premium quality brand rather than commercial quality brand filters.
