thanks all. yes, it's the evap purge valve. and yes, when I googled evap unit, I was getting evap canister pics, not purge valve pics. so thank you for clarifying ..
okay so here's what was crazy: the inlet side of the purge valve was wide open. not connected to the hose leading back to the canister. rather the hanger-plug (the Christmas tree looking rubber hanger thingee) was plugged into the hose from the canister. That struck me as nuts! and I've been thinking back to who I let work on my car and if they would have done that on purpose or by mistake.
Is there any reason to PLUG that hose (I've read of some people doing a 'bolt' mod plug) but at the same time, I can't understand why you would and even if you were plugging it, wouldn't you plug it on the throttle body side ?? I have to believe a previous mechanic was in some kind of hurry (read: drunk) and plugged it in wrong.
Anyway, I plugged it in right, and cleared my CEL so now I will wait to see how long before or if it returns. Any thoughts on the above welcome. I couldn't believe it when I saw it and thought OF COURSE I'VE BEEN GETTING CEL FOR A MONTH OR SO. OF COURSE I HAVE. I I thought I'd have to track down a subltle vacuum leak and it would take forever, instead I found this goofball set up.
look at the picture in my original post above, you'll see it's the wrong way around.
