Have you checked the condition of your three engine/transmission mounts? It is very possible that the mounts are dry rotted, oil soaked or just plain old and deteriorated. If the engine and transmission move too much, the shifter mechanism will not line up resulting in poor shifting pattern or not being able to get into a gear. It is even possible that a bolt or nut from a mount has come loose.
