FYI,
For a '97 900SE
A few months ago, someone spilled cocoa in my car - on the switch box/console. I didn't notice anything wrong with the car until recently -my right window was struggling to go up, then my left window, then my lock switch would lock but not unlock. Off to the dealer I went as my warranty is still in effect.
The dealer indicated that they found a sticky substance in the switch console. As a result, they would NOT cover it under warranty. Apparently, Saab has many problems with the location of this switch console for the exact same reason and has decided not to cover these problems.
The switch console costs about $210. I said I would return next week. In attempts to avoid the $210 whammy, I disassembled the box, cleaned any corrosion, and bent the metal triangular pieces to see if that would solve the problem. I fixed the left window and the lock switch. However, the right window would cause a fuse to blow. After two boxes of fuses and many disassemblies, I thought it was time to go back to the dealer.
At the dealer, I explained that I had fixed one window switch and the lock switch simply by bending the metal triangular pieces, and that the cocoa spill was a few months ago - thus, the defects were from wear and tear not cocoa, and the warranty should cover it. They still said sorry charlie. I then requested the name of the Saab rep that the dealer talked to regarding warranty coverage and said that he would definitely hear from me, and that I might even buy a Volvo from the dealer down the street. Yes, I have looked at the S60. What do you know, they covered it. Lesson 1: no drinks in the car, Lesson 2: persistence pays.
And there was a bubble forming on the top my automatic shift handle. They replaced that plastic item under warranty. Who would think that would ever cost $365?
