My take on it was the intent with this one was to "clear the palette" after the prequels with something that felt more like the Star Wars universe (i.e., space opera) and bid farewell to the original cast and set up characters and plot lines for the future....since you know Disney did not buy the franchise to not make lots more.
Given those constraints, I think they did a good job. It "felt" more like Star Wars than the prequels did, the new characters have potential, and the hand-off from the old cast makes sense.
I also was not impressed with the Kylo Ren (i.e., Darth Vader like) character on first viewing, but on the second viewing the character made a bit more sense. He is not the Vader of the original Star Wars film. He is a Vader wanna-be, but still struggling with figuring out who he really is. Sort of a better acting version of Anakin from the prequels.
Given that Disney wants to make more Star Wars movies, this was not a bad transition from the past to the future. It was fun. And Harrison Ford looked like he was having fun in a movie for the first time in a while.
