I tackled two hood chips, mainly due to minor rusting through the primer than for cosmetic reasons. One was on the quarter panel and small. One on the hood that is fairly large. I put up two pics of the result on the large on. This is my first attempt at this type of repair so I would like some feedback as to how to better do this next time. The chip clearly looks touched up at close range. At a distance it is barely noticeable although in some light one can detect some paint irregularity. I think this is due to poor sanding technique or perhaps inadequate polishing to blend things in. I only used wet sanding, rubbing alcohol, and klasse AIO. I used a spray can of primer (dupli-color) and saab touch up and clear coat. All layers were applied with a toothpick. I didn’t quite get this step. It always seemed either too thin (not really applied at all) or too thick. I have a lot of shadow or darkness inside the chip repair. I tried, but couldn’t get the chip to be the perfect level of the paint after sanding. It is smooth to my nail, but not to a fingertip. I wonder how this compares to the results I could have gotten with Langka blob eliminator or something similar. Did I use too little/much primer/paint/clear? Should I have filled in the chip more before painting/clear coating? I followed the advice to put a coat of paint and then fill with clear. I actually used two coats of each since the first try didn’t go perfectly. The match is pretty good in the middle of the chip, but not at the edges.
Appreciate any and all feedback.
