cleaning the wood veneer- 9-5 shifter surround

Need to clean the wood veneer around the shifter surround. What can I use that won't damage/delaminate the wood or any protective coatings? This is my second surround, the previous one was severely discolored from the prior owner and I don't know if the reason for that was due to improper cleaning, spill, or just from age/temperature/sunlight.
