Sorry up front for the long post!
I am looking for suggestions (and a place to vent)! I most recently bought a CPO car from Saab and have had many issues with it. I understand there is no lemon law for used cars and explained that they bill the CPO program as more than just a warranty. These cars are to be "up to the standards of a Saab". I sent the letter below (including a detailed history of the repairs/issues) and they basically told me that they would honor their end of the purchase by continuing to repair the car as needed.
Does anyone have any recommendations on other avenues to pursue or suggestions. I have loved all my Saabs, but am getting a bad taste from this experience. Have other people had similar experiences and/or had satisfactory resolution on issues with Saab Cars NA?
Thanks,
Doug

Dear Ms. Kelly-Ennis,
I am a dissatisfied customer! Referencing your letter of January 5, 2004, where you personally “thank me for choosing a Certified Pre-Owned Saab” and state that you “appreciate your [my] continued confidence and commitment to our [your] products and company.” I certainly no longer have confidence in your products or company and my commitment is beyond wavering.
I have been a loyal Saab enthusiast since convincing my mother to buy a Saab in 1986. I have owned 3 Saabs, purchased significant amounts of Saab paraphernalia, driven from St. Louis to New Hampshire for the 1997 Saab Convention, participated in the 2003 local Saab Proving Grounds and been a vocal advocate of the virtues of Saabs to all my family and friends. These people are now laughing at me!
I loved my 1986 Saab 9000T and put over 138K miles on it before it was totaled (an accident in which my fiancé had no injuries). I had numerous problems with my subsequent 1996 Saab 900 SET, while putting on almost 100K miles, but always dealt with them because the car was so much fun to drive. When I looked to replace that car those issues caused me to look at other makes, but in the end my heart still belonged to Saab.
In October 2003, I bought a CPO 2000 95 Aero, which I had desired since seeing it unveiled at the ‘97 convention. I purchased a CPO car for the two reasons most people buy them; knowledge that defects would be replaced under warranty and more importantly the reassurance that supposedly comes from Saab’s name behind the car’s integrity and reliability. I have had many issues with this car, the most major of which I have detailed on the attached page, three of which have left me stranded.
In addition to the mechanical issues with the car, I have been extremely disappointed with the service I have received at three different dealers in my local area. The poor service is the reason I have tried different dealers, but the issues seem to be systemic. The service centers have eventually “repaired” the car, but apparently are not trained in diagnosing the true root cause of an issue and implementing a final corrective action. I have had to return to the dealer for the same issue on a number of occasions. A broken fog lamp bracket required 4 visits to Valenti Motors before it was fixed to the point where the light sat flush to the front of the car.
Obviously, I am looking to get rid of this car before I am left stranded again, or worse, when it dies in the middle of the roadway. It pains me to say this, but I can’t imagine why I would look at another Saab. I wanted to inform you of the situation and look forward to hearing from you.
Respectfully,
