What is the client? I've seen scenarios where the client has some sort of massive desktop, and RDP is trying to fill it...
I use RDP all the time, and have for six years. But, I'm usually connecting from home to a fast remote connection so I get the benefit of my download speed... I've never had issues, and often it blows my mind just how well it works.
I used VNC for a couple businesses I help out - primarily for security reasons. It always performs well, but the slowest of them has a 384k upload...
