Pontiac and Buick both still have loyal followings, and when conbined into single stores, their combined sales make money for the Dealers. Pontiac doesn't have a large freeway cruiser, and Buick doesn't have any smaller cars, but when combined the brands cover most of the market segments. (Not that they are my cup of tea)
Saturn still doesn't generate enough sales to remain viable. As good as the mostly Opel product line-up is, they were allowed to "die on the vine" by GM before they could build a large & loyal following.
I believe it was on Trollhattansaab.net where I read a long market research paper/opinion piece on this topic.
