Hey Peter! How's things?

I don't think you'd have to replace the whole house filter any earlier than usual. Even if you kept the fridge filter, that water's going to go thru the WH filter anyway, placing the same number of total-use gallons thru it regardless.

Can you cross-reference a different fridge filter with a better micron rating? Or retro-fit a completely different filter just for the fridge? (For example, in-line in the water supply line before it reaches the fridge?)

I use a 0.5 micron, solid-block carbon filter for all cooking/drinking/ice cube water. There's a huge difference in taste over non-filtered water, but I couldn't tell you if there's any difference between that & a 10 micron, granulated carbon filter.
