1990 900, 185-65/15 Nokian WR:
When I removed my WRs at the end of last season I noticed that the rubber at the edge of the tread on one of them was split. Even though the tires had been used for two snow seasons (about 10k-15k mi total use), the tire shop took it back for replacement. Unfortunately, Nokian had discontinued the WR & replaced it with the WR G2. The shop agreed to replace another one of the original WRs so that I could keep the new tread pattern paired with one of the same.
FF to this week & it's snowing (northern Colorado) so I've put the mixed/matched Nokians on the car again. My question is, if they were your tires, would you put the new ones on the front or the back?
Pros for new tires on front:
The new tires have 10/32" tread & the old tires have 8/32" tread. Under normal rotation, the deeper tread would go on front to keep wear even on all four tires. This means I'll probably still replace all four tires as a set when the time comes.
Pro for old tires on front:
Wearing the old WR tires out quicker will force buying new G2s sooner, allowing them to be matched with the replacement G2s & getting all four tires with the same tread sooner. This would also keep the tread of the new G2s closer to what the 2nd pair of G2s will start at.
But, even running the old WRs on the front this winter, it'll still take at least this season & next (& maybe two more after that!) before the old tires are worn enough to replace 'em.
Any opinions? .... about the tires, I mean ....
