It's all a matter of what you're looking for. I wanted to never have to buy an air filter again, if I could avoid it. Like you said, I wasn't interested in any "performance" upgrade. I started using one in my '90 900 (w/MAF) about 9 yrs & 130,000 miles ago. I'm still using that same filter. It's been cleaned twice so far, & does an excellent job at filtering dirt (based on the contamination readings from my Used Oil Analyses). My last cleaning of this K&N was after 90k mi of continuous use.

I also ran a drop-in K&N in my '97 Chevy Cavalier for 3yrs/30k mi, then another one in my '99 9³SE for 8yrs/90k mi (no MAF in that car) with only one cleaning, & now another in my '02 9³SE for the past 1yr/10k mi (w/MAF).

The best thing you can do, if you get one, is to not clean it too often. It's only warranted for a certain number of cleanings (& years of use), & every time you soak it in cleaning solvent you break down the fibers a bit more. Once every 50k mi is definitely more than enough, unless you live/drive in very dusty/sandy conditions. I also recommend keeping your old paper filter for when you clean & oil your K&N. That way you can simply drop in the paper filter & not worry about how long it takes to clean/dry/oil/rest your K&N.

I can honestly say they're one of the few aftermarket products that delivers on its claims. I don't expect to ever buy/use a paper filter again.
