We don't hate them... We just can't get them. Bear in mind that I have absolutely no experience with diesels in passenger car applications. From what I can tell, however, the last experience most Americans have with passenger car diesels is from the late 70's and early 80's when diesels were loud and dirty...that remembrance continues to live on today, even though the technology has changed drastically. The auto industry in the United States has somewhat been stuck between a rock and a hard place since that time. From their perspective, no one wants a diesel, so they can't justify the resources and money to certify a diesel engine for the United States. Since diesel engines in passenger car applications aren't widely available, the general population isn't educated about the new diesel technologies and therefore won't consider purchasing a diesel car.
I realize there are a few blanket statements above and the Saab community tends to be the exception to the rule. I, for one, would love to drive a diesel and give it a chance. Hopefully the mentality of American car consumers can and will change slowly over time. Until then, gasoline it is. Drive safely and KEEP ON SAABING!!!
