Came close a couple of times, but never pulled the trigger. I had a couple of slightly modified VW beetles that I thrashed and autocrossed relentlessly in the '70s, usually beating more powerful Celicas, Civics, Subies, etc. Went to a Scirocco in '78, then a GTI in '86.

My wife came equipped with a '77 Corolla 2-dr wagon. Not a bad car but we sold it and kept the Scirocco.

Our first Saab in came new in '84. Cross-shopped Subies, Nissan Stanza, Camry and Honda Accord. Had that Saab 20 years.
