I am blessed with having survived a cracked heat exchanger in my Gas Forced Air furnace many years ago: electronic thermostat failed "on" when I went away for the weekend (last thing I did was turn it down to 55 degrees) and I came back to a 100+ degree house on Sunday night - I opened all the windows to cool things down (fresh air) or I wouldn't be here today. CO monitors either didn't exist then or were a rare thing for homeowners - I didn't have one.
For your current situation: Your CO alarm went off, you felt the effects and your blood oxygen told the tale - there is a real problem, and you need to find it NOW. I'm betting on a cracked heat exchanger or a blocked chimney.
