Unlike Saab, my fwd Volvo S60 stinks in snow. Just stinks. Front wheels spin, traction control kicks in, all of the time. I now wish I had bought the AWD option, but coulda shoulda woulda...
Couple months back I noticed my front tires were worn, but the rears were like new. Rotated them. Now the Volvo drives much better - still awful compared to the Saab, but not as disgusting as before.
I'm no expert, but for the life of me I cannot understand the logic or physics behind putting the better set of tires on the rear of a FWD car. The rear end rarely, if ever, slides in normal driving. At least in my experience, putting the better tires up front helped the Volvo - which needs all the help it can get in light snow.
I don't know what Saab did differently, but the 9-3 just takes to the snow. Volvo should hire some of the laid off Saab engineers to figure out their secrets.
